Gundam Wing fic- GW500 Prompt 217 - See Through. "Chess"
Quatre was five years old the first time he saw a game of chess and he was immediately entranced. He had watched the patterns forming on the board spellbound and laughed in delight every time a new move was made. Quatre who even at that age was both extremely smart and very manipulative mentioned the game at least twice a day, every day for two weeks. Finally his second youngest sister Silvana offered to teach him the rules in a desperate act of self preservation.
On the first day Silvana showed Quatre each piece and explained the moves they were allowed to make, when she was finished Quatre sat completely still in total silence for about five minutes before looking up and grinning “OK now I see.” He laughed and ran off, Silvana sighed and shrugged at her little brother's strange antics, resolving to teach him properly in a few years.
The next day Quatre was waiting with a familiar stubborn look on his face and the chess board when Silvana finished her lessons. Resigning herself to her fate she agreed to play a game with him, she patiently corrected him when he made a mistake and explained her strategy as she played. After losing Quatre sat and stared at the board for several minutes before thanking her and running to play in the garden.
Silvana wasn’t even surprised to see Quatre had set up a game for them on the third day. After Quatre won they both sat in silence staring at the board for several minutes before Quatre giggled “Chess is fun, it makes pretty patterns”. After Quatre left Silvana went to see her father. On the fourth day when Quatre wanted to play, he had a new opponent who made lots of new exciting patterns and talked about prodigies and chess tournaments.
Years later if he was asked about the war and the final battles with Oz and the White Fang Quatre would say "Chess is all about predicting patterns, even when you play with Gundams and mobile dolls as pieces."
If they then asked Silvana about her brother's chess she would say "It took three games to teach Quatre to play chess, the first he watched, the second he looked, the third game he saw."
