Once his crew had their jobs for this trip and headed off, Mal took the time to collect all the cash he had saved, and then picked up a couple of trinkets he had been saving for trade. He packed them up, pulled on his leather jacket and headed off Serenity.
It's several hours later when he finally returns to the docks with some cargo. He's happy to see Serenity's still in one piece, and he lovingly caresses her hull before walking up the ramp and dumping his purchases into the bay.
This is where he is, happily unpacking stuff, like replacement parts for Kaylee (his wedding gift to her), and some more medical supplies for Simon (ditto wedding gift).
...And if anyone mentions the gold wedding band on soft glint of light from his left hand? He'll ignore them.
