Mixed systems is the way to go. I think that not only every person has a particular balance point they favor (between dualist and communist in this regard) but also when dealing with others that balance point must shift.
I have learned the hard way at work, I have to be very dualist. I have had to turn away friends because they couldn't pay me up front. To do otherwise can actually have fairly severe consequences. But at the same time, I still occasionally am moved to do the good deed for people as long as I know I can do it without my job being interfered with.
With my personal time I am far more communal. I regularly buy dinner for friends knowing that in the future they will take care of me. I help them move because I feel I get "moving Karma" which will be repaid when I have to move (This happened a LOT when I was back in my college days)But again there are certain friends who I cannot do this with because they WILL take advantage of me.
You have a good head on your shoulders and something resembling a conscience. let that be your guide.
