I found
this video on Youtube (whatever did we do before the internet?) and I had to laugh and laugh. The one line from the lower case n song (The lower case eehhhnnnnn) has been in my head since I was a kid, slightly morphed, and all I could remember was that I loved it. Love, love, loved it. And that it had a rocket ship in it. Now that I've seen it again, I'm a little alarmed as to what this says about my childhood psyche. Or possibly my current psyche. Or maybe the types of songs we were influenced by in the 70s. Ahem. My mom liked the Mommas and the Poppas and the New Christy Mintrels, what can I say.
In other reminders, hey, I'm going to be dancing on a stage in a couple of weeks, along with other dancers. Go check out the
eXit SPACE site for more info on how to buy tickets to one of the shows, May 3rd and 4th.
I'm in four pieces in this show, and I said I'd be giving some info about them soon, so here goes. The Tuesday advanced modern class is dancing to a song called
"I Can't Hear the Music" by James Blunt. It's going to be very starkly lighted, and it's a very visceral kind of piece, instinctual movement (for Marlo, anyway) rather than really technique-driven, although the strength needed for some of this is on the high side, and my technique is still challenged by some of it, because, well, I'm just not as good as I'd like to be. But I'm still totally dancing the hell out of it. We'll be wearing short black dresses that are very flowy with bell sleves, all on a diagonal cut, with a V-neck and a partially open back. I was going to post a picture, but it's in Word, and I don't know how to do that. So um, you'll just have to come see! Yeah, that's the ticket! Anyway, there are some extremely difficult moves and some fun partnering and lifts in this piece, and the last big loud bridge bit is just kick-ass. I really need to be faster at it, though. [Added later - we will be wearing black booty shorts under the dress, just so no one is shocked. And I need to get a nude-colored shelf bra, probably. Those dresses fly up a bit, as clingy as they are.]
The tap is to "Shake, Rattle, and Roll," I believe it's Bill Haley on ours, and I can't find a good version on the Youtube, sadness. But really, if you don't know that song, you should. Go find it on itunes or whatever you're listening to these days. Cool saxaphone, 50s drumbeat, ('cuz it's a 50s song, yah-huh) and just the toe-tappingest, finger-snappingest kind of song there is. Mmmm-hmm. Ahem. The tapping is very upbeat, lots of rhythm tap, lots of fun riffs and lindy-hopping goodness. It's also very, very fast. Gah. It should be a fun crowd-pleaser. I don't know what we're wearing yet - TBA is the only info I have for this piece. This is the piece I'm in that's only in the family matinees, so if you're yearning for tap (and who isn't) you'd best buy your tickets soon. Last year the matinee sold out. She added one, but that doesn't mean it won't still sell out. The kids are just that popular. [Added later - found out the costume is wear whatever you want in red, white, and black, as long as it's crazy and fun and silly. I'll be the one in the clown suit. Kidding. Marlo was going to wear polka dots and checks, though. So I think a trip to the thift store may be in order. I only have red sweaters and tights with flaming lips on them. Long story.]
The Thursday int/advanced jazz piece is to
Lenny Kravitz "Are You Gonna Go My Way," also very, very fast. This is a running, jumping, sliding, sexy, rocking, stomping kind of number. Look out for your socks, they're coming off. We'll be wearing a black long sleeved wrap-around top and black pants. Reminds me, gotta see if those black pants from last year still fit and look good. Otherwise I totally have to go buy new ones. I might anyway. I always felt like my ass looked ginormous in those last year. {Added later - there's also a bright pink tank under the black wrap shirts, because none of us want to show off our bellies, and also to relieve some of the black. Still look fat in pants. Oh, well. Marlo said to wear them anyway.]
The Saturday intermediate modern piece is to two songs from Nine Inch Nails, but not the way you're thinking. They're introspective, quiet but building songs, the first one being
Adrift and At Peace, and then moving into the second,
Leaving Hope. The choreography is moving and filled with longing. I don't know what we're wearing for this one, either, but Marlo has a vision of simple white dresses, kind of pedestrian. She just has to find them first. The feeling of the movement is of saying hello and goodbye to loved ones, is what she wants. [Added later - wearing tunic-like tanks in sliver, pink, or gold, with loose black pants. Have to buy a nude leo or shelf bra for this and the black dress for the other modern piece. Thinking shelf bra will be cheaper. ]
So those are the pieces that *I'm* in, which I know is really the most important thing. There are lots of other really cool numbers, good choreography, and in general great dancing.
Come to see the show! Love to have you. :)
PS Appropos of nothing, I totally want there to be a band called the Bad Adverbs. The band members could have nicknames like Funnily, Indubitably, and Fish.
PPS. Yes.
