How is it the middle of July? And Happy Birthday to my Daddy, and several other wonderful people, too.
This past week and weekend we did All The Things, and yet still, there is so much to do. I did put up decals on the walls of the baby room, amidst yea verily, much sailor-ish swearing. But it looks pretty cute. So with those decals, I can live with the beige-y taupe of the walls and we won't violate our lease by painting without permission. Although I don't know that the decals were all that much *less* work per se. Oh well.
The crib is put together, we have a mattress, one mattress pad and one sheet. We'll need more of those sheets and mattress pads, but I feel like OK, we at least have one set. We can't have bumpers or blankets or quilts in the crib: it's a possible suffocation hazard, and the state won't let us. Blankets are purely for stroller, carpet, and sitting on laps time. (It's too easy for an infant to pull a blanket over their head, or get caught against the bumper and have it suffocate them, apparently. It has happened.) For when it's cold, though, sleepers and sleep sacks are apparently A-OK, so we'll do that for whatever tyke is in our care. Right now that won't be a problem, as summer has finally arrived and our upstairs is warm and muggy. We'll have to keep a fan or an air purifier in there instead.
Most of the paperwork is done, but we still have a few things to fill out or finish. We need to find time to go to a fire station and have them do ... something ... to our fire extinguishers. And we need to find fire ladders that will work for our house. And, and, and, and ... the list feels like it's never done. But we're further along. I'm hoping to be done with things by the end of the month. I mean, completely, utterly, finally done. Stupid defunct pond in the stupid back yard filled in included.
Sunday we're having a party/bbq/becoming parents shower (less shower-like than many) to celebrate this stage. I had hoped to be done with all the licensing stuff by then, but, um, yeah. However, the only deadline is the one we impose on ourselves, so they'll still let us in the program, even though we're running behind what I was hoping for. So we'll party like bedtime is at 730, and let people admire my mad decal-applying skillz. And Scott's mad furniture kit putting together skillz, as he put the crib together, and the new tv stand, and the bookcases, and all that jazz. I've been organizing closets. Just as important, but less showy.
I'm feeling less overwhelmed than last week, maybe because I did take both the 4th and the Friday off of work and got some stuff done. Maybe because one cannot exist in a state of overwhelmedness forever. Maybe because I have finally been able to get back to dance, so I have some endorphins again. No matter why, I feel a little better. Which is good. I'm off to make lists and check off things that are done and feel like hey, at least that part is done. Soon we should be licensed and awaiting our own little Humphronymous or Meredelightful. Hooray!
