Even though we don't have the History Channel, our Virgin box still records things it shows for us to watch, last night I watched an episode of Just Another day in which Adam Hart Davis looks at everyday things and traces their origin throughout time and space.
During the show he explained that Romans, who invented most of our stuff, owing to a good climate, farmed and the bulk of their foot was bread supplemented by other things cooked in pots, while the ancient British, lived on animals they cooked over an open fire.
The British then discovered that when they poured water over the fire, the ash and water formed lye, which mixed with the fat and formed a lather, a lather they then washed their utensils and ash ridden clothes in.
They didn't invent soap, they discovered it, by living their lives.
I already believed the cosmos had been created, by a being more powerful than human beings, but I think the fact that soap happens when you finish eating is proof that they put some thought into it for our benefit.
