Summary: Jin askes Kame a question
Question
“If I had asked you back then, what would your answer have been?”
Kazuya paused and spared a quick glance towards his side before continuing to pack his items. Jin was looking back at him eyes wide and openly honest.
“What does it matter now?”
“Because…even now I still think about what you would’ve said.”
For a long couple minutes only the soft sound of Kazuya packing up for the day could be heard in the room. A deafening silence soon followed after he was done and Jin let out a soft sigh looking a little hurt.
“Gomen, I shouldn’t have bothered you.” Jin murmured softly and got up.
“Would…” Kazuya started suddenly and Jin turned around questioningly; Kazuya was facing away from him. “Would you have asked me if I my answer had been yes?”
“No.” Jin’s reply was quick and Kazuya’s eyes widened as he turned to look at the older man. Jin was looking straight at into his eyes, “I wanted to know that you would have said yes, but it wouldn’t have been fair if you had. Even I can’t be that selfish.”
Kazuya went quiet once more and an awkward silence filled the room.
“I…” Jin pressed on, “I would have been okay with it you know. I won’t lie, it would’ve hurt but even if you had said no, I would’ve understood.”
Jin watched as Kazuya got up from his seat and headed for the door. It was soft, but as Kazuya walked by Jin there was an almost inaudible “I guess it’s good that you didn’t ask me then.”
Jin’s eyes widened in confusion. Kazuya’s single statement did not help him in the least to finding the answer to his question. Yes it was good that he didn’t ask because Kazuya could have said yes, but it was also good that he didn’t ask should Kazuya had actually said no his own feelings would have been spared. He turned around quickly and called out Kazuya’s name.
“If I ask you now, what would your answer be?”
Kazuya blinked at him mutely for a moment. “My answer now is still the same as it was then.”
Jin looked at Kazuya hard and swallowed agitatedly; gone were the days that he could read the younger man like an open book - and Jin knew it was partially his own fault. Kazuya smiled and turned away from him, stepping into the elevator and for a split-second Jin thought he could see a hint of sadness behind that patented idol grin. Time was running out and what had started out as a simple question seemed to have morphed into something that meant so much more. There was a sinking feeling in Jin’s chest and he felt that if he let Kazuya leave now he’d lose his Kazuya forever, so when the elevator doors began to close Jin instinctively rushed into the small space.
Kazuya gasped as Jin reached out to grab his arms - firmly but not too tight. There was a desperate look in the older man’s eyes and Kazuya couldn’t bring himself to look away.
“Wha-” Kazuya started but was stilled by one of Jin’s fingers
“Would you run away with me?” Jin’s voice was soft.
Silent tears began to fall from Kazuya’s eyes and his whole body began to shake. He was suddenly pulled into Jin’s warm embrace - it’d been too long since he last felt those arms around him.
“Where would we go?” His voice muffled by Jin’s jacket.
“No where, everywhere. Anywhere you want to go.” Jin whispered into his hair.
Letting out a small sob Kazuya slowly brought his hands to wrap around Jin’s back. Jin tightened his hold on the smaller man and nuzzled his head into the crook of Kazuya’s neck.
“Kazu?”
“Hmm…?”
“You never answered my question.”
Kazuya let out a watery laugh and pulled back slightly from Jin’s embrace and wiped his face dry. Raising himself onto his tip-toes Kazuya gave Jin a chased peck on the lips before the elevator doors opened. He grabbed one of Jin’s hands and smiled brightly at the older man.
“Yes.” Kazuya replied happily and stepped out of the elevator Jin's hand securely entwined with his own.
