Saw The Used in Birmingham Tuesday night. They were just brilliant. They were so much better than I dared hope.
Got in there for the last couple of songs by Hexes (None of them are fit! - my sister's words) and saw all of We Are The Ocean. We Are The Ocean did this thing where the screamy singer (Wikipedia tells me his name is Dan Brown) opened up a circle in the crowd, came down into and used it as his stage. We weren't too sure if he wanted to get a mosh pit going, because he got out of the way of anyone who came his way, but he was trying to get us to move more. There were about 4/5 people in there most of the time, and it did get crowded by the end. At one point, I wasn't paying attention and got my foot stood on, but it didn't acually get hurt.
In a way, it was a shame more people didn't just go for it. If if had been a band I knew better it would have been amazing for them to do something similar.
The guitarist who did the normal (clean) singing - Liam Cromby (thanks Wikipedia!) - has an amazing voice and I loved him. We were stood/ended up right on the edge of the circle so spent most of the set avoiding people coming our way. It meant we couldn't watch the stage as much as we'd have liked. But what we heard was very very good. They're playing local to us in November (and they're from Harlow! Which is exciting to me because it's where I was born)
I might have (read definitely did) ditched my sister when The Used came on. The crowd moved and I followed, but she didn't so much. The circle opened up again and I was to the front or it. She stayed off to the side and moved back a bit to where she could see the stage and I kept moving forward as well as I could. I kept checking on sis, that she hadn't dissappeared when I wasn't looking. By then of the night I was about 5 people from the front and could see Dan! Please can he be having a riser? I love watching drummers do their thing.
I don't know how to express how great I thought The Used were on stage. I would quite happily go and see them over and over whenever they next come to the UK.
I forgot to say, it was hotter than a hot thing in there and everyone was sweating buckets (hence post title). It was so hot and sweaty chewing-gum unstuck from the ceiling and almost landed on Bert (he looked like he was considering catching the next one in his mouth....)
music is love,
life is hard,
