Helping the child or adolescent trauma survivor:
In the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, and in the weeks following, it is important to identify the youngsters who are in need of more intensive support and therapy because of profound grief or some other extreme emotion. Children and adolescents who may require the help of a mental health professional include those who show avoidance behavior, such as resisting or refusing to go places that remind them of the place where the traumatic event occurred, and emotional numbing, a diminished emotional response or lack of feeling toward the event. Youngsters who have more common reactions including re-experiencing the trauma, or reliving it in the form of nightmares and disturbing recollections during the day, and hyperarousal, including sleep disturbances and a tendency to be easily startled, may respond well to supportive reassurance from parents and teachers.
*sigh*
On Saturday I have my first appointment with Sara Dobson who will hopefully be my psychologist. I like to think that this is the first step to finally over-come the suicide of my mother even though I'm looking forward to the day with trepidation.
Last night, after Karen left and all that, my neck/shoulder pain got bad. REAL bad. The bad that makes me feel as though I'm going to throw up. That makes me almost-white when I see my reflection in the mirror. That coats my skin with sweat. I slept on a towel. :D And I ended up not throwing up! Yay for me! *hehe* Woke up with bad pain. Not agonising, but on any other day I would have labelled it as bad.
Called up a local mechanic who said they could fix my car today. Then called RACV to request a tow. 40 mins later they rocked up. YAY! As I sorta lay in my car all woobly and sore. Dragged my sorry arse back up to bed and slept several more hours. Woke up with a DRY TONGUE! Seriously it felt so weird I looked at it in the mirror and it was parched dry and almost cracking. Yeah.
*scratches head* Alright, got my times and chronology all mixed up. I had my juice from breakfast when I woke up with that dry tongue. It was with phone call from mechanic I think. Maybe. Made myself coffee for breakfast, but then realised I had only enough milk to just make my cereal. Ah well.
New Pyramid anyone?
Anyhoo, I got distracted by the tv and the news and such. I posted yesterday and mentioned the fanfic film I got interviewed for. Turns out he had some issues due to content! Got in touch with me after a fair amount of time,
"... I've had a lot of stress getting it all done. I had to reshoot stuff, some moralising member of the staff threw out all my storyboard cards which were up on the wall of my edit suite, and it was at first rejected by the censors! And of course everyone thinks I'm gay now, but you know, whatever."
I'll be getting a copy - cannot wait! :)
*hopes I haven't put my niche of fandom to shame*
Car got fixed for only $100. But they definitely over-charged me. RACV guy say the part ought only be ~$40 and they charged $55 for the part. Well they coulda charged more. But, yeah. It was done and I didn't know any other mechanics that was in walking distance! I could complain more about them but I can't be fucked. Having a mental breakdown like I did puts some things into perspective. Umm... Yay? *shrugs*
Do other people get these insights without having mini-breakdowns? Do other people have mini-breakdowns? I probably ought to mention this as something I need to work on, come Saturday. I need to make a list of all the ways I do not function as I believe I ought.
Free massage tomorrow night! \o/
Brother updated his Facebook status - he's alive!!! \o/
And I'm now addicted to the same Facebook
games as
amara-m. I can play
backgammon, annihilate the opposition, and it doesn't get annoyed at me and stop playing!!! \o/ I am no longer so upset that people refuse to play msn games with me any more. *hehe*
ETA: WOO! And I'm not #14 on today's Top Scores for Backgammon!
Downsides to today - Lots of crickets from these batches have died. Maybe they suffered bad heat or something on the way to me? They have been mighty quiet, compared to last week. Vet called. Blood test seems so-so/good but will get a smear done in another three weeks. I also asked about my feeding her the dead crickets (the ones not dead for long). She said it wasn't good as they start to rot after just a couple hours. *sigh* But if that's why she's got high white blood cell count maybe this is the way to get her healthy! I'm glad I brought it up.
*ponders that maybe her poop is healthier when she's not eaten the dead crickets the day prior and blushes*
Oh! And when car got fixed and all that? I had this ring. I dropped it somewhere in the car and didn't know where it was. It was uncovered! *hehe* I found it on the floor - clearly the mechanics moving the seat around dislodged it or something. it was my fave for a long time! Not sure which finger it will fit on now, but with the summer weather swelling my fingers up, I'm sure it's the perfect time to wear it again!
PS Given up on the flocking - The Russian Bots appear to have lost!
