Hello everyone! My friend ripped off a little slip thingy as a joke (she's always teasing me about LJ. Heh.) but I thought it'd be worth joining up. I like talking to people, anyway ( Read more... )

Yeah, well, we don't talk about that description too much. Our coah wrote it, and though she is the best lady ever, she tends to make no sense unless you speak Fraziereeze.

The book is about Stargirl, who was homeschooled until high school. She decided to go to public school, and everyone there shunned her because she did her own thing completely. After she was gone, they all realized what a treasure they had in her.

Essentially, we had the guidance councilor and teachers at the middle school recommend seventh and eighth grade girls from all walks of life. The only qualification is that the girls would benefit from a program focusing on affirming individuality and creativity, in whatever form it takes. The idea is that the arty ones in the corner are the only individual ones out there. If you're shy, you're shy, as long as that's really you. If you love shopping, love shopping, as long as that's really you. And so on and so forth.

We then did four workshops and an overnight with the girls using ideas from the book Stargirl and from just the hazards of middle school in general. The first workshop was on the "Woes of a Stargirl" as we put it, but they were essentially the issues middle school girls face. (Body image, cliques, rejection, conformity, and so on.) The second was a discussion of Stargirl, since we were able to give them all a copy, including whether or not they even liked the character of Stargirl, since she did some things that could really be considered downright creepy, and whether we had those perceptions of her because of the way "society" trains us to think. The third was community service and random acts of kindness. The fourth was discussions with "Starwomen" that we know who talked to the girls about everything.

The overnight was essentially a party, but it focused on individuality. We did yoga, made necklaces, had an excessively long "Inner Beauty Pageant" aka talent show, and watched Now and Then. We played some little acting games and things as well. It was a step out of your zone kind of thing, in some respects, though we didn't force anyone to do anything.

Like I said, the idea wasn't so much to get strong individuals only. We had some of those but we also had those who had the potential to be but where just too scared.

That was long, but I hope that covers it?
