What do you know?

Only a few days ago I filled a meme about my favourite movies, mentioning CASABLANCA. Tonight I found it, purely by chance, on a cable channel -- one of the few that I can afford. And, as with every time I have the good luck to watch it, it looks better. If you do not get tears in your eyes at the Marseillaise scene, you have no tear ducts; and ( Read more... )

I feel embarrassed admitting that I have not seen it yet.

I'll add it to my "movies to rent" bookmark folder so I can remember it the next time I'm in a Blockbuster.

I haven't seen Casablanca yet, but I think you just described how I feel about 'Citizen Kane'. If movies like 'Freddy Got Fingered' are the cinematic equivalent to an anal raping with a rusty crowbar, 'Casablanca' and 'Citizen Kane' truly restore my faith in humanity and culture.

Ooh, I like watching the cable channels too. I recently uncovered an old VCR in our basement to go in my room (and it only weighs about 500 pounds,) so I've started to tape everything I can. "Casablanca" hasn't been on the channel yet, but hopefully it will be soon. (My dad thinks it's a waste of money to rent the movies when we can just tape them. *Sigh* I come from such a cheap family. Maybe I really *am* a Weasley.)

I am extremely cheap as well. 8-) Comes with living in a consumer society with too small an income for too long. In fact, outside of things such as tax and ordinary food supplies, I cannot point at the last thing I ever bought for the full price. Oh yes, wait - it was my first copy of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, two years ago. Otherwise, I think I can honestly say that if there is a way of getting something cut-rate or for free in London, I know it.

Well, I know that our tastes in fiction differ very much, so I am not surprised. But I hope I do not come across as patronizing when I say that I feel a bit sorry for you on that account. I simply feel that you are missing out on an immense and elementary pleasure. The technical perfection and moral greatness of CASABLANCA are not in that sense the point; they just are part of an experience of tremendous admiration and personal enjoyment that I have in watching, reading, or listening to, such things. (For instance, I am currently listening with enormous excitement and enjoyment to Liszt's mighty transcription for two pianos of Beethoven's awesome Ninth Symphony - the musical statement of the values of our civilization, and an earth-shakingly exciting piece of music into the bargain.) I would dearly love, one day, to share it with you, not because I want you to learn anything, but because it is such a beautiful and positive experience - fun and pleasure raised to the nth power. Till then, however, do whatever seems best to you.
