People are afraid, and scared people don't act rationally. They want to make the scary stuff Go Away, and are willing to follow anybody who promises to protect them.

I'm watching it over here, in our Presidential election. The further things go, the more I feel like all the good possibilities keep falling away to become alternate timelines and the remaining possibilities are getting worse and worse.
