1) A major border crossing - the only bridge between the city of Detroit and Canada - is privately owned and privately controlled. No other country would tolerate that for a minute; in the US apparently it's all right.
2) The owner is a first generation immigrant from an unfriendly country.
3) The federal government seems completely disinterested in this shocking situation. The local state government is the only entity trying to do something about it.
4) Apparently unable to do the obvious thing and confiscate the bridge on national security grounds, the state government is trying to have another built instead. This is not a solution on the security side, since the privately owned bridge would remain a security issue.
5) To prevent this, the owner with the dubious past has purchased the favours of Americans For Prosperity, the Tea Party organization - you know, that lot who are all about safe borders and free markets. In this case, however, AFP are quite happy with an inadequate, inefficient, traffic-choking monopoly in Detroit border crossings - never mind efficiency and fairness, let alone national security and free competition.
Until this shocking knot of shameful situations is tackled, I would suggest that no American speak slightingly of, say, Greece.
