So often there are people who say "comics are respectable!", but as long as readers demand cheesecake, and artists and writers and editors pander to that desire, they'll stay the same softcore pornography. There are some really great non-cape comics being made today, many online, but they are decidedly of a different class than the examples from the article.
Comics ARE respectable. Do you think what they do is in any way different from the various reports and entertainment news that newspapers and weeklies use for an excuse to show photos of pretty girls in bikinis? What about that recent cover picture in, IIRC, Time magazine, with a woman breastfeeding an adult man? What about most movies, in which innuendo, unnecessary nudity, and sex scenes, are as commonplace as postboxes? I don't see why we should treat comics as in any way special. And I am not disposed to condemn the likes of Jack Kirby.
Woah, did I say it was different? I agree with you in that, actually! I just thought that, because comics were the focus of this, I didn't need to point that out. My bad.
Yes, the thing is that sixties Saturn Girl with that red and white uniform was much more attractive and charming than the Cockrum version with all-red bikini and boots. In fact I am not entirely sure she did not contribute to my design for the Silver Angel.
