A true story

May 27, 2011 17:09

Months ago, I had a long talk about politics and contemporary trends, especially in the USA, with a woman whom I knew to have supported abortion when it was still forbidden in her country of origin, to have had one when it was still illegal, and to have voted for it. I explained my view that abortion was the elephant in the room, that it conditioned most important developments in modern politics, and I mentioned the recent polls that gave, for the first time, a pro-life majority in America, as well as the bizarre behaviour of Britain's Royal College of Midwives and Obstetricians. She eventually said: "I don't want to talk about abortion, it makes me sick." "Well," I answered with some surprise, "the thing is, we may yet live to see it outlawed." "Thank God for that," she said.
