What do you do if you are young, quite pretty, and your working life is over? Martina Hingis is having an appalling few months. A couple of months ago she appeared on the British TV show Strictly Come Dancing - and she was the first to be eliminated, though she did not deserve it. I don't know who this person is, but I have to add my little comment here--falling off a horse in a jumping competition is not necessarily a huge humiliation or career killer, if you're a serious rider. That would only be the case if a rider entered a competition way over their ability--a 3'6" jumper class when one is only riding over cross rails in practice. "Only people who never ride never fall off," and I had my worse fall ever after 20 years of riding--my horse spooked badly (I hadn't yet realized she was losing her eyesight), managed to spin me right off her back, and kicked me in the back and stepped on my hip in the melee.

Martina Hingis is a former world no.1 tennis player. You can see why this kind of humiliations in physical competitions could be worse for her than for most. She is supposed to have ridden horses her whole life, so I shall hope she knows the comforting maxim you quoted.
