kennahijja, who is a nice person but a fanatic nevertheless, thinks I am a right-wing extremist. marycatelli, who is decidedly not nice and still a fanatic, thinks I am a dangerous socialist with gulags up my sleeve.
You must be one of those weird people who think for themselves....
At the time of the Labour party's evolution into New Labour I was surprised to discover how many people supported them like a football team.
If they had adopted all of the Conservative's policies, rather than simply taking on most of them, those people would have followed them because they defined themselves as Labour voters.
Gawd, I know. I have spent ten years wondering how on God's green earth the unions could possibly go on supporting what I called Forced Labour; and coming to the conclusion that it was the private ambition of union leaders, who could still look forward to knighthoods and peerages even if their members spent half their time being P-45ed. But I guess that party spirit also has something to do with it. Incidentally, I gave up my own football team (MIlan) when Mr.Berlusconi started using it for political advantage.
"I'm pissing off both sides; therefore I'm an indepedent thinker!" is usually evidence of cognitive dissonance, not independent thinking. E.g., pro-life libertarians, Log Cabin Republicans, etc.
In your case, though, you're a pretty standard European Catholic. The cognitive dissonance comes from your (American) detractors, who are confused, because right now in the U.S., it's impossible to be a social conservative and not also believe that the government is evil and public health care, in particular, is a secret plan to kill old people and put abortion clinics in middle schools.
kennahijja is a German from Swabia, which makes your analysis somewhat hasty. Incidentally, she is the finest fanfic writer I have ever read - better even than you - and if you have not read her work, I double urge you to.
P.S.: I am also at odds in various ways with most Italian Catholics I know on the net.
