I could get to like John Prescott

Jun 04, 2006 18:51

For those of you who do not know British politics, John Prescott - a hulking, dialect-spouting ex-union man - is Britain's Deputy Prime Minister. His position is currently under attack by the press, due both to a few bad decisions (nowhere near as the disasters currently overwhelming Britain's Home Office machinery and its National Health Service) and to a widespread journalistic contempt for his dialect and rough-hewn manners. A few fellow ministers have openly expressed their interest in his job. Now the kind of stuffed shirt that journalists expect in politicians would have answered any question with a "no comment" or some saccharine platitude; but it takes a fully-paid-up member of the human race, and one with a natural flair for the dramatic, to answer a question (thrown at him in the surroundings of an international conference in America) with a spirited "'Ave you come all the way from the United Kin'dom just to ask daft questions like that?" Yes, I could get to like John Prescott. To have politicians being insolent to journalists, rather than the other way around, is a refreshing change.
