day 04 - your views on religion.

Oct 12, 2010 20:06

So... I have been a borderline Christian, an atheist, an existentialist, a humanist, an agnostic, and a Jew, amongst other things.

I would say that I am my own sort of humanistic existential Jew with an interest in Kabalah and Shinto and an open mind.

I support anybody's personal choice of religion or lack there-of. Honestly, I don't think any of us have got it quite right yet and we all have a small piece of the truth, if there really is such a thing. Fact is, no matter what your label, you may be surprised to find that people of other labels agree with you on some points more than other people with your label. Interestingly enough, I have talked to many people of many different views and the people whom which I have shared the most common ground were rarely Jewish. The top two were a Sufi Universalist and a Zen Buddhist.

I think it is really important to be tolerant of others views. Its also important to realize that the thinking behind some people's views aren't as extreme or close minded as they may seem, even if they result in speech that may seem the contrary.

One of the great examples of this is the perceived homophobia of American Christiandom. Although there are homophobic people out there, most people who may support homophobic practice are often just supporting the construct of the world there religious culture has imprinted upon them. We all have a construct that has been imprinted upon us by whatever cultures and/or communities we have been a part of. One should remember that everyone has assumptions, and just like you would not want someone to treat them harshly because of your perception of the world, others feel this way too.

Treat others with respect and fight discrimination and misunderstanding with discourse and openness. There are the weapons with which the revolution will be won.
