I want to comment on Ru, whom we knew as Ismenin an we all know of her passing last week.  I first met her on a Tolkien forum in 2002 an was smitten by her charm, wit and determination  Oh, and love of hobbit porn, can't forget that.  I sort of wasn't really planning on going to Collectormania, but as things turned out, I had a chance to do it an I said to myself, "Ru is going to meet Elijah Wood if it is the last thing I do."

This was a group effort.  So many LJ friends, Lady Sunrope and others.  I came to Swansea, met Ru and Patti (and we went to Bath together, a real treat for me- the Jane Austen Slut)  -- then to Collectormania  where luck and the the dogged determination of LJ friends got Ru her chance.  This was not something that could ever happened without all of us as a team.

Whether she ever knew it or not, that experience taught me that when something is that important to someone else - and that someone is important to me --  I will move heaven and earth to make it happen.   You learn things from people like Ru.  She had terrible illnesses -- most of us whine over a broken nail and in the ten  years I knew Ru on line, it was amazing how little she commented on her health.  Her health sucked, but she made light of it.  Any one of the things that was wrong with her would have killed an ordinary person.  It was a freaking miracle she made it this far.  She was a fighter, that's for damned sure.  We could all learn something from that.

Her writing kept her going.  One more bit of history to research an craft a tale.   Something to get up and look forward to.

I cannot imagine Patti's grief, or her family's.  This was not unexpected but that doesn't make it any less of a shock.

Ru will live in our memories forever and in that regard, she is still very much alive.

Into the west, where we will all meet again someday.
