Too flippant to be called a review - some thoughts on the film.
Fright Night opens with images of Peter Vincent (David Tennant). He is introduced via a TV commercial in the background and the scene draws back to reveal a family home with Mum and son engaging in normal family stuff. This introduces the normal that is about to be disrupted.
Colin Farrell takes the role of Jerry. Jerry is a vampire, a charming but not very subtle vampire. I have no idea how he has kept his non-human status a secret for so long, he’s not very good at hiding it. Colin does a reasonable job of switching between friendly neighbour and menacing before descending into all out psycho.
The women are not helpless screaming girlies which always annoys me in horror. They have guts and take action, modern women whose fear doesn’t stop them being brave and intelligent.
The 3D is quiet good. When the vampires explode you get bits of them flying towards you. I don't think the make up and CGI has moved on much from vamp movies like Bram Stokers Dracula.
Peter Vincent is a git. He’s a drunk who treats the people around him like shit and relies on his money and fame to get him whatever he wants. This shallow character is slowly revealed to have some depth and an emotional history that David portrays with sympathy. He manages vulnerable and scared, macho and wanker, heroic and injured all whilst looking absolutely gorgeous. (What did you expect from me? Seriously?). Wasn’t especially taken by the South London accent though.
I think it’s fair to say it's an enjoyable film but it's not great. There are a few moments that have suspense and tension and a few that make you jump. A few laughs. Nothing that I thought - “wow! I've never seen that before!” David Tennant is undoubtedly the best thing about it.
It’s a simple and often told story of weirdness disturbing suburbia and good triumphing over evil. I had a good evening watching it, didn’t find the horror overpowering. (I usually avoid horror, it gives me nightmares!) I expect I’ll watch it again when it hits general release and I’ll drool over David’s topless form once more.
I’d recommend it to David’s fans, fans of Colin and fans of vampire flicks. Teenagers will probably enjoy it and it does remove a lot of the hamminess of the 1985 version. A good update for 2011.
Oh and did I mention David looks hot in it? Really really hot.
