Proving the Worth of a Raven

The robin, dove, finch, and raven always sat in the Elm tree as the morning light fell over the hills. From their tree, they could over look a rose garden. Everyday the robin would turn to the dove and say, “I am special because I bring love just like the wild red rose, of the same color, that grows in the garden.” The dove would sing a reply agreeing with the robin. Then the dove would turn to the finch and say, “I am special because I bring peace just like the white rose that lives in the garden.” The finch would nod in agreement and turn to the raven that was sitting next to him and say, “I am special because I can bring about friendship like that of the golden yellow rose that buds in the garden.”
Each day, the robin, dove, and finch would ask the raven why he was special. The raven never had a reply. Each day his heart would fall as he desperately searched for why he was special.
One day, after having been asked once more, the raven told the robin, dove, and finch that they would prove his worth to the world. That night the raven flew into the garden and he pecked at the stems of the red, white, and yellow roses. As he pecked at the stems teardrops of dew fell from the roses. The raven opened up his beak to catch the tears. After the roses had turned black, the raven spit out the dewdrop tears on to the stems.
The next day when the robin, the dove, and the finch awoke, they peered into the garden. Their precious roses had turned black. The robin cried in despair and the dove and the finch were of equal sorrow. The robin asked the raven how black weathered roses could prove him special. The raven told them to be patient and to return to the elm for the following sunrise.
Over night the raven watched the garden with ever longing eyes. At dawn when the robin, the dove, and the finch awoke, they once more peered into the garden. To their surprise the black roses had fallen off of their stems and were replaced by hundreds of new bright red, white and yellow roses. The robin, dove, and finch questioned the raven one final time as to why he was special. “I am special because I bring death, but along with death I also bring life. I cause love to be even more special because I prove that it endures all, I cause heartbreak, but yet I strengthen friendships, and last I bring peace like the dove and white rose, but in death rather than life.”
