[that which is in dreams]

She was running.

Her breath came in labored gasps, and she was running. The odor of scorched flesh seared her throat, and the smoke burnt her eyes and knifed through her lungs, and she was running.

All around her, the fires raged, devouring Aizu whole and leaving ash and debris in their wake. Her home lay amongst the rubble, but she no longer had time to look back. The echoes of battle and the blast of cannons permeated the roaring inferno that blazed over the city, as well as the new sound of artillery, and the bloodcurdling, stifled screams of those who died beneath their assault.

Stay here, Megumi. You’ll be safe here.

No-okaasan, I can help in the field-I can help the wounded too-

Megumi was not a foolish girl. She did not cry out for her parents, for her siblings, because she knew that that would get her killed-and if she died, she could no longer find them. She was running-not away from the battle, but towards it-towards her family-

She was running. The streets were strewn with dead bodies, skulls and sternums cleaved in two, rivers of blood and lymph and pus soaking the stale, dying earth-

She was brushing her hair in front of the mirror.

Eruption

A crimson city of fire and blood

You're too young to die, Megumi

She slipped in a pool of blood and bile, stumbling onto her knees. The rocky soil bit into her palms, streaking red-she bit back a cry of horror as she came face to face with the source of the sticky, slippery puddle: a face, with eyes open to ghostly whiteness in death, blood and saliva frothed at a dislocated jaw lying upon the remains of what was once Ishinshishi-a gaping gash from shoulder to groin severing him in two.

She stared at him in disbelieving terror.

She made to stand, to keep running, but her heart plummeted in her chest when he turned to her, ever-so-slowly, broken jowl moving to speak in a voice that grated on ears like steel against steel and the whining, shrill, screaming sound of a wet finger running against the sickly sweetened rim of a wineglass-Your father is dead-

Dead

A ring of dull, shrieking light

Otousan! Don’t leave me . . . I want to help . . .

Don’t leave me, please! Okaasan!

Oniisan!

Don't leave me!

Aizu is burning . . .

And then, he was grabbing her wrists, his grip unrelenting, rivulets of blood trickling from empty eyes as he retched maggot-infested intestines and rope and surgical blades onto her-

I’m hungry, he said, doctor-

And his mouth opened with a snap of cracking, fractured bone as he lunged at her, and she was screaming, screaming-

[accidental voice post]

[There is a muffled wail, followed by the shuddering gasp of someone jolting awake.]

I-

It's just a dream.

Just a dream . . .

I'm not alone.

No longer alone . . .

[A muted whimper.]

Don't leave me, please . . .

[A moment of silence, until the faint sound begins within the transmission . . . a sound like a finger running against the dampened rim of a wineglass . . .]

Don't leave me . . .

[abrupt static]

[ooc; as stated here, Yamamura Megumi will be sending loathing and anger in Takani Megumi's direction during the course of the day--thus, she will feel abandoned, pained, and scared most of the time, despite what her rational mind can tell her. ♥]
