omg, discovered awesome new Garbage songs on the single of "why do you love me" that I bought ages ago! Rock on!! And I thought I'd heard all their songs...forgot about all the B-side stuff that must be out there!

It may have been a "rare occurence", but even so, not something I want to see happen unless I physically break the thing. Granted, it was shipped interstate, but I doubt that would have caused problems.
If you want to still get an iPod, I'm not stopping you, and I don't intend to, but just bear Tess's technical woes in mind, t'is all. that and similar problems have happens with them in the past, and personally, they look ugly.
To answer your question, your best bet is something that has a replaceable battery, one reason being less risk of battery-related problems, the other being you can stick the dead batteries in the charger, put in a new pair, and you're all set.
Creative Zen's are apparently just as bad as iPods, but I've heared less technical woes about them, perhaps it's worth checking out one of them?
Sony's latest player seems to be promising, and you can't go too wrong with a Sony product. They're more expensive, but -as you know, Sony products are of a high quality. I wouldn't have even bothered with a MiniDisc player if my Discman didn't finally die after years of abuse.
Friend of mine, Ozzy, owns and recommends the iRiver. It's a little hard to navigate, but apparently it's all in the manual.
