Soldier doesn't like Cap. It's what happens when a flighty stallion meets a sturdy gelding and doesn't quite see the point of his existence. Soldier tried to kill Cap, the first time they met.
They can just about stand to be in the same ring now, which is a huge development. Mr Fury, who owns the stable, said that one of them would have to be sold if they didn't get their acts together. Steve's pretty sure Fury was talking about the horses, but one can never be sure. Fury's big on everyone earning their keep, whether it's the horses or the men who shovel the shit.
Bucky and Steve have worked hard to get Soldier and Cap to this point. Steve thinks that Bucky might be the only person who can control Soldier, which makes Soldier pretty useless as a teaching horse, but he is beautiful and he can be used to breed. Cap is steadier and usually not so flighty but his nostrils flare and his ears flatten whenever he so much as smells Soldier. He always does what Steve asks, though. With the mildest pressure from Steve's calves, he walks forward and Bucky's persuading Soldier to do the same.
The two horses meet in the middle and snort at each other but there is no biting or kicking. Carefully, Steve moves Cap past Soldier and Bucky reaches out to grab the front of Steve's sweat-sodden t-shirt. Cap stops.
Bucky leans across and kisses Steve and it's nothing they haven't done before, though the horses aren't usually mortal enemies. He kisses him until Steve parts his lips and kisses back, one hand on the reins while his other hand cups Bucky's face. He kisses him until they are both breathless and Soldier stamps his foot.
"Walk on," says Bucky, mildly and he continues on his way.
(Later, Fury says that it's not the most orthodox approach but if it gets results, he's not going to complain.)
