Laugh It Up, Co-workers!

I'm home from work early today! Because it's Veteran's Day, Tim gave me and Dan (because we were both in the military, though mine was on a technicality) half a day off. That was cool, and it wasn't like we had much to do today due to the rain. Oh, but that's not to say that today wasn't interesting!

Okay so due to the rain beating down on us this morning, there really wasn't much to be done around the city, so Tim had some special training for us. He brought us all in the Conference room to give us a heads up on the American Disability Act and what we can do to contribute to it in our work around the city. We thought it was going to be like a lecture or two on the importance of the ADA and how we as city workers can help, but Tim had something else special in mind for all of us, which I'll get to in a minute. So after the conference session, he told us all that he was making Mostaccioli and garlic bread for lunch, but there was a catch to that. All of us had to go out and get the ingredients for him, BUT we had to do it in these:

No, I'm not kidding. That's me in a wheelchair! Don't worry. Nothing happened to me. This is all apart of that "special training" I was telling you guys about a minute ago. Here's the deal. Tim went out and borrowed four wheelchairs from our community center and had the eight of us that were there take turns riding them around. So for half of our day, we were pretending we were physically handicapped! Was it an experience? Oh if you've never been in a wheelchair, you better believe it is! We had to do it all. We had to go shopping in those things (you can imagine the looks we all got when we went into the Maplewood Shop 'n Save...eight city workers, four of them confined in wheelchairs...you do the math), we had to try to go to the restroom in those things (and by that I mean we had to actually wheel into the restroom, get out of the wheelchair like we're disabled, and sit down on a crapper...we didn't have to actually "go" but we had to just attempt it), we had to go around asking for stuff (city permits, library cards, room rentals at the HEIGHTS)...oh it was so funny. We even had to get on and off the community bus the handicap way, and by that I mean us in wheelchairs, on the lift, in the bus! Thank goodness we didn't have to ride the bus sitting in them!

So, yeah, today's work experience was hilarious! You guys should have been there! It was that much of a riot!
