So I ran a quick Scion one shot last Thursday. It was pretty rules light and mostly focused on the characters learning that they were all scions at a charity event for autistic children with cancer (last time I ask Matt for random game flavor).
It went pretty well, though with some hang-ups.
The Good:
• The light rules worked pretty well. No battle wheel, they only fought mooks.
• I lowered the defenses of the players, and the enemies, but kept it from being a fire fight…since the scions so overpowered the goons.
• The other scion there was more screwing with them, so no real plot either. Just some fun.
• I wrote up the character sheets, with only 2 of the five players getting me stats to use, and only one other getting me a character idea. All of them started with 2 Legend and 5 special stats (3 epic stats and 2 level 1 powers). I wasn’t even on the starting relics, but it didn’t seem to matter much.
• Matt created a bitter, misogynist church organist. Somebody that feels any sort of pleasure is a sin. The sort of guy that writes letters to the editor every day. He drank plain soda water. It was a riot and his transformation into a scion of Thor, was priceless.
• Also it finished a little early.
The Bad:
• The two people I made characters for took a bit to get into character, but that is to be expected
• I think I stepped on the fun of one of the players again (I let half of the mooks get away, since it was about time to wrap up for the night). I seem to do that a lot with this one, and I need to figure out what I can do better.
• A map would likely help some players. I can visualize the space, and it is more mutable than say 4E, but I don’t always pass that on to the players.
Overall it went pretty well, and everyone said they enjoyed it.
