[The communicator turns on as Minato adjusts it. He's leaning back against some pillows on his bed. For the most part, he looks all right, save for the fact he's slightly paler than usual and bandages can be seen underneath the tank top he's wearing ( Read more... )

Ahh, Giovanni-san!

[... That actually made him cower away from his communicator a bit.]

[He isn't happy.]

What were you thinking?

I had to end it quickly. Not exactly the way I wanted it to, but I had to improvise.

Foolishness.

Can't argue against that. We should've had him disarmed before it got to that point.

Are you so inadept?

[Minato blinks at that.]

He acted less paranoid with his weapons and seemed to be able to keep it mostly under control....

No. Inadept at fighting.

[Well that's actually kind of offensive, considering he's pretty much the best of his generation in Konoha.]

No. I'm too adept. I'm relearning how to fight without killing.

How tragic. Disarming an opponent is quite useful. Pity your teachers did not do their job so well it seems.

[He isn't playing nice lately. He doesn't care about your feelings right now either. So stop being a pansy and don't whine at him.]

It wasn't enough to just disarm him--which I did, thank you very much. I could have disarmed both hands instead of just one, but that would have only let him continue to fight without his weapons.

He was not a simple foot soldier. You cannot "disarm" an opponent whose entire body is a weapon. The only way to do so is to render them unable to fight, and I had to have him still for a moment to do that.

It was a reckless move--of that, I am well aware of--but it wasn't without thought. It was something he could not predict, something he could not counteract in time, and it allowed me to end the fight without killing him. I was not going to risk letting that fight continue a moment longer than I had to, with the possibility he might hurt his brother, for which he would never forgive himself. He can--and will--eventually forgive himself for hurting me.

[By now, he sounds rather angry.]

I would much rather risk my own safety than that of my student's, even if it meant being out of commission for a month or two. So don't you dare--dare-- ( ... )

What makes you think nobles do not know how to protect themselves? My job requires that I travel for my patron's business. I could gladly accept his offer of protection and take guards with me--but that would be a burden, and I would feel even more indebted to my lord than I already am. Besides, plenty of nobles carry swords at their hips as privilege. Who better to know how to use one than someone who can afford a proper education.

[He is very good at subversion. He sounds perfectly reasonable and convincing through the entire speech. He never falters and never sounds false. Imagine Giovanni at his most charismatic and suave of voice and that is what you get here. There is also a hint of smugness there at the end.]

Congratulations on your efforts and preventing an unnecessary death. Next time perhaps you will think more quickly and prevent the unnecessary damage. There are two kinds of competence. You fall short on the most important kind as of this moment.
