Irreparably Damaged

So, the Attic.

Did anyone else think it was way, way, way scarier when they were sending Dom there than when Echo, Tony, and Priya end up in it, in 2.10 "The Attic"?

I mean, the idea of feeling like you know something but you can't come up with it is one of the worst feelings in the world, but what we see is just a nightmare.

And since they're personalised, that makes it even less scary. I feel bad for the characters and everything, but it seemed much less frightening than the original description, since your brain would be able to eventually rationalise that it isn't real, as opposed to never being able to form a cohesive thought, ever.

Remember in episode 1.03 of Firefly, "Bushwhacked", when Jayne says that the man who attacked him "looked bigger when [he] couldn't see him"?

The less you understand something, the scarier it is. As soon as your brain can start pulling it apart, once it becomes one thing and not anything, it starts being less frightening.

Heck, it may have been even scarier before Adelle described it in 1.09 "A Spy in the House of Love", because it was just this vague fate-worse-than-death punishment that could be anything.

It's the same with Alpha, or the Reavers in Firefly, or in 4.22 "Restless" on Buffy with the First Slayer. It's scariest when you don't know what it is.

I guess they needed it, story-wise, but it definitely lost its impact after we visited.

Also, why are Echo's toenail's painted? When they package her up for the Attic, in 2.09 "Stop-Loss", her toenails are red. It just seems like a weird thing to do in the Dollhouse, and her imprinted persona for the engagement she went on didn't seem to require nail polish, especially not on her feet.

I don't know. There's nothing wrong with it specifically, it isn't that it couldn't have happened, just that it probably wouldn't have.

first slayer, but why?, echo, tony, btvs season four, 1.09 "a spy in the house of love", just saying, mr. dominic, reavers, the attic, 1.03 "bushwhacked", firefly, dollhouse season two, jayne, dollhouse season one, alpha, priya, 4.22 "restless", 2.10 "the attic", dollhouse, oogly-booglies, 2.09 "stop-loss"
