Writing 101

Apr 19, 2007 14:28

Hi again - Further to my earlier post, I had a request to list the questions that are in its Comments and post them all together.  So, here they are:

- what inspires your writing?  story?  plot?  characters?  looking out the window?
- do you have to be inspired by/interested in the subject, or are you able to write about pretty much anything?
- do your stories come to you whole or piecemeal?
- do you work independently or more collectively, taking suggestions and feedback during the writing itself?
- do you tend to have a lot of drafts?
- do you write because you have something to say, or because you want to be heard? (personally, I think there is a difference)
- do you write for yourself, or for your readers?
- have you felt truly satisfied or happy with any of your stories?
- and, yes, the old 'do the characters talk to you'?  or, its opposite, 'do they ever shut the hell up?'

And, if there was a 101 or Dummies Guide to Getting Started in Writing, what would you have liked to have known, eg:

- 'no, Virginia, you're not going crazy because the characters talk to you'
- 'yes, it's perfectly okay that the first line you wrote is actually the last line of the story'
- 'no, not all authors can dash off anything'
- 'yes, it's okay to have favourites'

Any additional questions or 101 references would be great - please feel free to add!
