Ashes

My journal has been home to 3,251 posts detailing my deepest insecurities and highest aspirations.

I wrote a script to delete all but one of them. A few minutes ago, it finally completed its run.

So it's absolutely wild that I happen to find this post which is all of 10 days old as of this writing. I stopped writing to LJ a long time ago, but was randomly thinking back to my days on LiveJournal and people I corresponded with, remembered your name, did a Google Search, and here I am!

All these years later, I'm still "out there" in the furry community. It's been 20 crazy years of attending and staffing conventions, and the upcoming Midwest FurFest will be my *100th* convention.

If you want to view photos of my adventures, they're all on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dmuth/albums

My (mostly tech) blog at https://www.dmuth.org/ if you like reading about Docker and doing dumb Twitter things. My contact page there has links to all all my socials. And my GitHub is at https://github.com/dmuth

As for my LiveJournal, I left it as-is. Everyone once in awhile I'll get nostalgic and read through there, reading things I wrote 15+ years ago, and seeing friends who I've falling out of touch with, as well as some friends whom I still have today.

Mylesk! How ya doing, old friend? :)

No, really ... how are ya doing? I had a look at your LJ, and I have concerns! Are you feeling cut off? Anything it would help to talk about?

Giza! Cheetah, if I remember right? :) It's great to hear from you again - I'm really glad you randomly checked in!

I envy you (slightly!) for having kept up with the furry community. There's a lot of good people in it, and I've missed out on so many connections. I haven't been to a con since the early days of Conference. Occasionally I want to re-embrace my vulpine side and reconnect, because there's such a wealth of tech skill, creativity, and just darn good people there. Maybe one of these days! (Then again, I'm currently employed by a mouse and 'furry' might be taboo there...)

Funny you should mention Docker. Tomorrow starts up the company's cybersecurity capture-the-flag challenge. This is my second year doing it, and after messing up my personal PC installing all manner of tools, I finally made myself learn Docker. I just yesterday set my new PC up to use Docker (WSL complicates things a bit) so that I'm ready to dive in again this year.

Let's please keep in touch! I still have a character on FurryMUCK, though I only check in rarely.

You should absolutely check out a con again sometime, the furry convention scene has come a long way since Conference--I know because I lived it when Anthrocon moved to Pittsburgh in 2006 and suddenly became very a high-profile event whether we wanted it or not. We got lots of press coverage, and literally everyone in the city talks about us.

The convention is now an institution of Pittsburgh itself.

MidWest FurFest is in a similar situation, with something like 11,000 attendees in 2019 and has several partner hotels. The event is absolutely huge--both conventions have children who ask their parents to bring them to the con, and Anthrocon has a panel called, "So my kid drug me to this convention."

I doubt your employer will care much. I work for a publicly traded Fortune 50, and it's barely a footnote. The most interest they had in it was the year MFF got gassed and my manager emailed me to see if I was okay.

So yeah, do stop by a con sometime. :-)
