The Sounds of Music

Household 6, b_anderson got me a Logitech Squeezebox for Father's Day!  W00t!  It is an amazingly cool gizmo.  Since the painting studio is back in action, I have been spending more time in there.  However, there's no music in the room since I canceled XM and moved the little Sony stereo back into the bedroom.

We've been shopping for a whole-house music system.  The nice folks and the Bose outlet in Leesburg came up with a system that would cost a mere $6500.  I don't doubt the quality, but if you have to choose between eating and tunes...

Anyhow, we've been getting more and more into Internet radio these days.  I'm finding a lot of great stuff on Pandora and have recently re-discovered Live 365.  So we really wanted something that could tap into Internet Radio as well as all our CDs.  Since we've ripped all our CDs and put them on a separate media server, they too are available on our home network.

We looked at the Sonos systems, but they too seem a little pricey.  It'll do what we want it to do, but again, by the time we get everything set up just for the basic system, we're already into a couple of mortgage payments at least, and the systems aren't nearly as sexy as the Bose.

So, we thought we'd test the waters and see if these things even work at all.  The Squeezebox seems to do the trick.  Very easy to set up and register, and was into Internet radio stations right away.  Setting up Pandora and Live 365 was a breeze as was setting up my PC as a music server.  I am thinking the Logitech system will be a bit more scalable and affordable.  The sounds quality on the Squeezebox is great as well.  Really fills the room.  Since I really have to have some kind of noise, TV, radio, something, going pretty much all the time now, this is a nice solution.  Plus it is portable!  What's not to like?
