His homeworld was muted browns, and abysmal greys. The sky was constantly overcast, even with the terraforming, and he didn't see stars until he left for the piloting school on Leshen. Even the clothes were dull.

It was what drove him.

The beauty and the stars and the wonder. His home world felt so small and dirty and he was drowning in it.

As soon as he was off world he invested in the most colourful and garish clothes imaginable, despite what it did to his meager savings.

The first time he saw a gas nebula he almost cried. The first time he slipped into a Hawaiian shirt he laughed out loud, right in the store, earning an odd look from the guy behind the counter.

It was the colour that made everything worth doing and kept him from going home.

Because as big and glorious as the universe was he was alone in it.

Until he saw her.

Chocolate, Mocha, Earthy Goddess. A thousand adjectives to describe the glory of her skin and they all left something wanting. She was by far the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, and he'd seen the moons of Osirus, blue and green and misty because of the atmo, the nebulas so bright and painful it was like looking into the face of God.

Her name was Zoe, and crappy ship or not, he knew this was where his journey was meant to lead him.
