IAATE conference, 2012
Catching up on posting some travel/adventure photos: Here are a few from the IAATE conference (International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators) I attended last year. The people I met there were so wonderful! I was able to get away from my art table on zoo day to get a behind-the-scenes tour of their bird facilities, collection, and how they run their educational shows for the public. It was a wonderful experience with a great group of people!
A beautiful king vulture.
One of the prettiest red-tail hawks I’ve ever seen.
An adult harris hawk. I hope to work with one of these birds of my own through falconry someday! I just love them.
Spectacled owl.
Parrot setup with cages off the ground for easy cleaning.
A crowned crane. He was so much fun to watch!
Group of rare golden conures. They were showing interesting ‘baby’ behavior despite being adults.
Highest security chicken I’ve ever seen.
Another view of the king vulture. Gorgeous!
Adorable touraco. An interesting note about turacos - they produce a pigment called Turacin derived from copper which is intensely bright red and are the only birds in the world to do so. I believe all other birds (or at least most) produce their red color from carotenoids (the same thing that turns carrots orange) or other things - but this pigment family is unique. :)
And of course, a penguin!
