New Painting: "Hermione's Canary"

Jul 05, 2012 09:10

For Ascendio 2012, I promised the Art Gallery and Auction curators that I will give them five new paintings. And then after I made that promise, I promptly facepalmed: I had two weeks to go, and three of those five paintings are unfinished.

So, now, less than one week to go, I have one painting finished! Two more to go, both in various stages of completion. I'm hoping to have one more painting finished by tonight.

Title: Hermione's Canary
Artist: foxestacado
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Hermione Granger
Rating: PG
Distribution: Please do not reuse or redistribute my artwork anywhere, anytime. This includes using my artwork in any icons, banners, collages, wallpapers, etc.

Some of you might have seen this painting before, but in its earlier iteration. I painted this originally for hp_tarot in the latter bit of 2011, and the entry can be seen here. I admit, I was a little unsatisfied with the painting, which is why no one got to see it besides hp_tarot. I was trying for a style, and I didn't quite get there with it.

With this version, I was able to accomplish my original vision. I wanted to paint a metaphorical moment, the aftermath of Hermione's pique and rage when she released those conjured canaries to go after Ron Weasley in Half Blood Prince. I wanted to convey a quiet, desperate but resigned and defiant jealousy and sadness. At the same time, her magical mastery, her transfiguration skills in the canaries, is not to be overlooked. She used their magic to empower her in that moment of rage and anger, and here, a lone canary keeps her company, a conjured, magical companion in her loneliness.

I hope you enjoy this piece! It's a much different style than I usually do, but it definitely evokes a style that I have been wanting to more-thoroughly embrace for a long time. The wood background is completely hand-painted. It is harder than I thought to paint wood!

If you are interested in buying a limited edition print, you can email me at foxestacado@gmail.com, and payment is accepted through Paypal. The painting will be masterfully reproduced on exhibition-quality Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper, which guarantees the colors for 100 years.

A framed print of this painting will also be donated to the Ascendio Art Auction, which benefits charity and HPEF, and will also be available for purchase at the Ascendio Craft Faire on Friday, July 13th 2:30-4:00 p.m. in Tuscon II.
