BACK FROM ICON HIATUS

For those of you who are not on my friends list, I have been back from China for a little more than a month. My fifth year at UCLA started in the beginning of October, and now we are in the sixth week of classes, and I am thoroughly engrossed/disgusted/enthralled/tired. I am currently working on a colonial literature paper, a ( Read more... )

I'd like to friend you because a) I constantly hear from my good pal-sister motorwill and a few others what a great person and a big XF fan you are. Now, to add up, I've seen/read the reviews of the movies and realized that that's about my own style and as I am a person who loves to drone about the movies I've seen/plan to watch on my own LJ (yup, I'm a movie geek) and prefer 1-2-3 paragraph reviews just like yours...it is another point in common I think we have. SO, I hope you don't mind. If you like, you can friend me back, I'd be only glad about it.

However, it is nonetheless stunning in its darkness, sexual energy, and visions of dreamlike grotesque cruelty which combines to seize and sicken the viewer in both nausea and esctacy. Hmmm. May I ask...to give me an example of dreamlike grotesque cruelty. Asking becasue yes, I'd like to watch this movie but recently extra gore/torture etc started to sicken me, like they did not before. However, every person has his/her own limit of squickiness, so could you? Also, I did not find the Constant Gardnerer to be a gross movie in any way.

Your icons of Scully this time reminded me of Japanese horror movies (Ring or Dark Waters), especially those where you used a green weed-like brush.

Friend away! And I'll friend you back, because I have friends-only material that is sometimes entertaining.

a) I constantly hear from my good pal-sister [info]motorwill and a few others what a great person and a big XF fan you are.
Damn, Dusty? *waves at her upthread* You're making me blush here.

I actually don't get to watch movies all that often, and I'm quite picky about what I will or will not watch. I tend to watch only a handful (or less) movies a year in theatres, but I do try to find opportunities to rent. My schedule is not very conducive for movie watching :( The movie reviews is a new thing I did for my last entry, and I decided to do it again because I just happened to watch three movies over a 2 month period (which is a lot for me).

What kind of movies are you into? I tend to watch non-romantic movies. And...uhh...I've been into stylized movies, recently. And...good screenplays and great cinematography really turns me on.

I also had a lot of trouble writing the movie reviews this week, but I'm glad you found it likable :D

The Constant Gardener is a kid's movie compared to Last King of Scotland. There is a lot of implied violence in Last King, because you see a lot of mangled bodies, sometimes photographs of mangled bodies. There's also a few gun fights and mass hysteria, terror, etc., but that's not that bad. Probably the worst is a torture scene. I think that got to a lot of people. There were very audible gasps in the audience when the torture scene was going on.

The grotesque and sexual aspects of the movie are enhanced by dreamlike cinematography and editing. And in that way, it's an interesting comparison between the primal feelings that fuel terror, violence, and sex.

Hmm, I've never seen Japanese horror movies, but thanks! It makes me happy to know that this odd style is not completely amiss :D

Well, people nowadays mostly talk about TV shows on LJ (well, I do that too), so I enjoy getting to know every person I encounter who shares some of my interests, one of them being movies. Last time I was at the cinema was...back in early spring, I recall. I mostly d'load movies and watch them at home. If the movie turns out to be drivel, no waste of money! I watch all kind of movies - from blockbusters (I'm rather picky with those, however) to indie and low-budget. I practically never watch comedies (well, with a few exceptions. I'd want to watch Borat, for example), lightweight romantic dramas and horror movies for teens.

Well, I try to put a few movies I watched during the last two months here, just so that you have an idea:

Hard Candy
Perfume: Story of a Murderer
My Summer of Love
Wilde (ok, that's an oldie, but I love this movie)
The King
Lady in the Water
The Magdalene Sisters
The Wicker Man (the original, from 1973)
Mysterious Skin
Velvet Goldmine

In between them were others, but they are not worth mentioning.

Anyway, I will give a try to Last King of Scotland. I can always close my eyes when there is a squicky scene. ;)

You never watched a Japanese horror movie? Well, I can't say I'm a fan of them, but it's because they are indeed too scary for me. After watching the Ring I could not sleep in one room with a TV for a few days! And I'm not easy to impress, I tell you.

So, I hope we get along. :)

Oh wow, that is an AWESOME icon! WOW. *is mesmerized*

Hahaha, where do you download your movies? I used to use Kazaa, but now I'm mostly using torrents. Oh, by the way, do you happen to know what happened to Kazaa? I tried to use Kazaa this weekend to download some music videos, and the search feature isn't turning up much at all.

The only movie I recognize on your list is Velvet Goldmine, and that's only because Dusty recommended it. I have it sitting on my harddrive right now, but I haven't watched it yet.

Hahaha, I haven't watched The Ring either. I'm actually not really a fan of horror. I don't really get squicked out much, but it's kind of not my thing. I guess it's because I'm not interested by the concept of movies that are driven by suspense alone.

So, I hope we get along. :)
I hope so too :D

Kazaa? I have no idea what it is. :) A d'load site, right?
I mostly use torrent-sites, lately.

I actually appreciate a lot a movie that can SCARE me, not squick me. Unfortunately I can count such movies (horror or thrillers) on my fingers. Ring was one of the movies topping the scare-factor. I was NOT scared a lto when I was watching it. Then I switched off the TV...and was terrified. ;) Actually Saw 1 kept me glued to my chair and made my mind work to unravel a riddle, but the next installment was just not that...

But then I'll be ready to add my 5 cents to any movie you review. :)

Hahaha, actually Dusty advised me not to watch Saw, because it includes self-amputation, which is probably one of the only things that really scares me. Which is why I probably will not icon Hell Money when I get to it. It's the only XF episode that disturbed me.

Well, I'm planning music video reviews next week, but I welcome your two cents anyhow :D
