I am totally torn, for while it would be great to go diving with you it is currently really bloody cold and I wasn't planning to go diving in Melb until the water has stopped being just under 14 degrees and the air temp just under 13.

I am actually thinking of going up to Herron Island later in the year to go diving, or to Ningaloo reef in about June next year.

If you want superb snorkeling, take yourself off to Lord Howe Island. It stomps all over Herron Island.

Coincidentally I was talking to someone else yesterday about Heron Island. It also ranks among my most favourite places in the world... One day I will go back and this time I AM going to dive!

I did wonder if it was too cold for anyone to be diving, but Dive Victoria seems to be running trips and their website says you can dive around Melbourne all year round. Is drysuit an option? It was 15C in Capernwray yesterday and not overly cold (even though my neck seal leaked and I was WET!); in fact some people were even in wetsuits, so it is possible.

I am very envious of your planned dive trip :) Heron Island is wonderful and I wish I'd been able to dive on the occasions I visited (about 14 years ago now, eep!). I really really want to go to Ningaloo, in fact I did wonder whether I'd be able to manage it on this trip, since I'm not usually back in June/July and this would be a good chance, but I just don't have enough time...

Dry suits are totally doable and if I had one I'd be diving; I just want to get wetsuit diving sorted out first!

Try check in the Australia subforum on www.scubaboard.com to see if you can find someone to drive with, maybe? Or I can keep a look out at my dive club for dives, or you could just email a club and ask!

The main problem I have atm is trying to decide which one to go to! I've always wanted to go to Ningaloo and I realised this year that I could take myself. It is an awesome feeling! I like that both sites offer pretty shallow diving too, since I'm only certified to 18 metres atm.

Which club are you with? Emailing clubs is probably a good idea, but it is nice to have some connection. I will need to get onto a club or dive shop anyway, even if I find a buddy from Scubaboard, because I will have to hire a load of gear.

I think either Heron or Ningaloo will be awesome, whichever you decide! I really have to plan more holiday time in Australia so I can go places outside of Melbourne...

Scuba culture, who I believe you have already spoken to. If you get no luck there, there's a club near my house that seems ok - Aquatic Adventures. I could go ask them if they hire to non-members and if so how much, if you need me to.

This is true! I can't really go wrong.
