Facebook *is* evil, and people should learn to spell

I recently did some thinking (and didn't post it here, cf previous post) about the ethics of the internet and social networking sites etc. In a nutshell, Baroness Susan Greenfield was reported by a number of media sources as saying "Facebook is BAD, mm'kay?" and I disagreed with several of her reasons for asserting this.

Anyway, I may have to revise my opinion somewhat.

Has anyone else acquired the habit of characterising their experience in the form of whatever internet-based social networking/communication site they use? Eg, when something of note happens to you, do you find yourself composing your thoughts into an LJ post on the spot (whether or not you then post it)? For those who use Twitter, do you tend to express your state of mind in Twitterspeak? And Facebook... ahh, Facebook and the status update.

This morning, I woke up (having gone to bed before midnight and hence having had a decent amount of sleep for the first time in too long) and thought to myself, actually thought in these exact words (and spellings): "Sarah feels alot better for having had a proper night's sleep for once."

!!!!!!

Yes, I thought "alot".

HELP ME! My brain is being overtaken by Facebook-speak AND by poor use of the English language! I know perfectly well, have known since I was able to speak, read and write, that "alot" is not a word. But the extent to which I see it used in brief communications (ha!) of the above type is encouraging my brain to use it in that context as an acceptable form of language. AAGH!!! =:-@

funny, random
