So, are you single?
Does anyone else think that this is generally (always?) an inappropriate way to begin a conversation with someone? And can you explain why? In fact, let's have a poll:

I had this question twice over the weekend, both in what I considered to be inappropriate circumstances. I think the reason I object to it so strongly is that it implies a whole lot of unjustified assumptions -- about me, about relations between men and women, about the way the world works and how people should be treated -- and thereby violates the way I want the world to work and how I want to be treated myself.
I'll elaborate on this reasoning in another post, but wanted to share my annoyance and see what others thought, for now.
(And meanwhile, off to the cinema to see Indiana Jones. Ah, it's good to be shallow and frivolous.)
