start spreading the news...

Jun 05, 2004 22:50

Well, actually I've already left. But it is still today, just - a very long day, considering it is now 10:50pm New York time and we left Melbourne 10am Melbourne time, about 27 hours ago.

First sight of the US: unidentified mountain peeking out of the fog on the West Coast, just out of LA airport.

Other cool things seen on plane across US (LA to JFK airport):
* Salt Lake, I think. No Mormons spotted though.
* Huge eroded river canyons winding across the dusty red plains
* Big mountains with snow in Colorado. Man, my US geography knowledge is bad...
* Long Island Sound, flying into New York

Observations about the US:
* Everyone has American accents (well, duh). Seriously, it's like being in a TV show...
* Books are really cheap here ($7US for paperbacks = $10AUD)! This could be dangerous
* It's summer here, hurrah! Light until nearly 9pm.

Total hours sleep since leaving Melbourne: 1

Currently: staying with Kate, Bron and Della in New Jersey; about to go to bed and get up reeeally early tomorrow to go up the Empire State Building and be generally touristy.

Profound thought of day: Maybe New York is the Byzantium of today? (ie land of hopes and dreams to which people travel to find their destiny - cf remainder of lyrics to above song - but built upon a huge but now crumbling empire...)

Bleh. Making no sense. Must go to sleep.

PS Happy Birthday to maggishness! Many hugs, hope you have a great day. :)
