I recall being pleasantly surprised by how cheap things were in Beijing - being the capital, I expected that it was therefore the most expensive city.

I found out from the rest of China that Beijing is actually one of the cheapest places to go to. :(

Glad to hear you are having a good time there - how long are you spending in Beijing?

The conference we're "actually" here for starts this weekend and finishes on 9 August; we fly home on the 10th.

Speaking of surprisingly cheap, we've just been shopping. I bought a full-length skirt for less than £4! which is a distinct bargain. on the other hand, their starting price was more than five times that amount, so I'm glad I didn't pay anywhere close to what they were originally asking...
