Wow, the "tell me something interesting" answers to my poll actually were really interesting. :)

Here's something interesting from my life in return (though some of you already know this): at 4:51am on Wednesday morning, I was at Stonehenge watching Midsummer sunrise! ( Read more... )

Soudns excellent! I only went once a few centuries ago and it wasn't even fenced off. But it was middle of the day and (as usual in Wiltshire) very misty. You lucky person you! Did you get to Avebury???? Now THAT'S a stone circle and a half. (Ellipse actually, but I'll shut up at this point...)

No, I think that will have to wait for some other time... actually, as we were leaving the Stonehenge carpark about 11am on Wednesday morning, they had very thoughtfully put up a sign at the exit to inform us that the Avebury carpark was already full! presumably with knock-on visitors from the Stonehenge solstice celebrations. We went to Bath and spent a very pleasant day and a half there instead :)

Somehow it just seems right for drunk ravers and twits to be climbing on Stonehenge. I mean, it's survived a metric buttload [*] of centuries already, and not because of the tender minstrations of the National Trust! It's there because it's tough. It's the Big Fat Bikey With A Beard Like A Mutant Hedgerow of stone circles, and it's only proper that it have a bunch of pillocks crawling all over it so it can sit there with an air of timeless nonchalance and barely even notice them.

Or that's what I reckon, anyhoo.

Did you know that if you stand right on top of Stonehenge and look in the right direction, you can just make out Terry Pratchett procrastinating about the next Moist von Lipwig novel? True!
