From time to time I dream about two cities. The first is simply a generic city. It is nowhere in particular. It is distinctive though. This city is endless. No matter how far I travel in the city I never come outside. Hallways open on to rooms. Rooms on to corridors. Corridors on to stairwells. Stairwells on to galleries. The sky is never seen. Nothing natural intrudes.
The second city is Toronto. I never dream about any specific city except Toronto. The Toronto I dream about is substantially different from the real one though. Most notably it has a much more extensive commuter rail network. A full-fledged subway system running east-west through the northern half of the city is a recurring feature in my dreamscapes. The subway station in Rexdale is quite large. It also conforms to none of the geography of that area that I can think of. Where could there be an above-ground boarding platform but still require commuters to come up three levels in order to board buses at street level? The bus platform is laid out as a large crescent. Buses run south from this station as far as the high school I attended but then must detour around a High Park sized green space before reaching the lake front area.
A light rail line, minecar light, runs up Jane Street. However this Jane Street goes all the way to the lake front. The same lake front area that the buses reach after their detour. The road there looks much like Bloor West Village, but flat.
This Toronto is also much greener than the real one. More trees, more grass, open space. Seasonally is almost always Spring there. If there is snow it is melting. If the snow has gone the weather is not yet hot. Jackets are always appropriate.
