Pity and sympathy are totally different things. Sympathy is understanding what the other person is feeling and supporting. It's more of a nice thing, really. Some people might not want sympathy, true, because they're embarassed or mix it up with pity. There's a fine line between the two.
Essentially, sympathy is a nice thing, and it doesn't prove that the receiver isn't strong; rather, that he/she is open to developing a bond with the giver :3

What we don't need...is sympathy and pity.
