Short works

The Guardian has a neat article on this year's short list for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. I always get something of a hankering for short fiction in the summer; something about the heat due to lots of sunshine that shortens my attention span. And this list should do me just fine. Not only that, but will inspire me to get started on Murakami in bite sized pieces. *wonders what the library might have* Besides, who can really resist a collection entitled Notes from a Turkish Whorehouse? Not me, that's for sure.

EDIT: It seems that everyone in London has read the same list and all the Murakami short story collections have month long waiting lists. Loverly. But my hubblet loves me so much that he managed to find a copy of the Turkish Whorehouse one. It will be such a shame when he goes back to work.

Book club last night was great as usual, I feel much better towards the book after the discussion, but am still quite negative about the style of the prose. Next book club book is Wicked, so since I've read it recently I have a bit more time for my own reading this month. Book after that is Master and Margarita *rubs hands greedily*. We'll see how they get on with this one. I'm certainly looking forward to reading it again.

I've picked back up Дневник Мага (Journal of a Mage) by Paolo Coelho in Russian again and am working my way through that, as well as a short book (though printed in a format that makes it awkward to read on public transport. grrrrr) on Avant Garde Russian Art, called New Worlds: Russian Art and Society, 1900-1935 in preparation for seeing the Tate's Kandinsky exhibit with my FIL this weekend.

Now, lunch.

book club, reviews, books, russian
