lockdown (when you're a professional pirate that's what the job's about)

May 08, 2005 12:07

So since I know people are wondering:

Yes, go_pirates was officially shut down, by the good people at LJ.

Stop asking why. None of you are that stupid.

It was shut down because it was an illegal file sharing community. All of you knew that when you joined- hell, when you applied to join.

I got an email from LJ, which amounted to "Abuse! Black mark on your LJ record! Repent! REPENT!"

Which, dude, is TOTALLY VALID. I'm not at all bothered by this. I knew what I got into, and I knew what it was when I started. LJ is not at fault here. Not at ALL.

Why did it get shut down?

It got shut down because of you.

Well. Perhaps not you as an individual. But you as a member of a large community of IDIOT FANS.

If you talked about go_pirates in a public, non-locked post? If you encouraged people you'd never met to join? If you are one of the people who pimped go_pirates at veronica_mars, at Neptune High, or (god help us all) at TWoP, where we all KNOW the official people come to play?

You did this to the community. You're an idiot.

Just so you know.

Fucking damn, people. There's a reason we lasted from mid-late-January to early May, while most ep sharing communities last, on average, a few weeks to a month. Do you know what that reason is? It's that I'm not fucking stupid. And I was working off the (clearly incorrect) idea that none of you (=members of comm) were.

See, here's what I don't get. It was wrong. We all knew it was wrong. And it got shut down, and okay, that's fine. I accept that.

What I don't accept is that you all (general you) are so fucking STUPID that you just go around, pimping it anywhere you can FIND rather than in quiet, discreet locations. The next thing you know, someone who's NOT as smart as of course you think you are finds the comm, doesn't get added right away, reports us to LJ (we assume), and we get shut down.

Why? Because you're an idiot. Thank you.

Seriously. It's the week before the finale. I get that you're excited and interested and yay, VMars! God knows I am. I'm assuming that most people reading this have seen at least some of my VMars squee, because, well, my journal. I pimp VMars like it's going out of style. And yeah, I've probably not been as quiet as I could be. But there's a difference between being slightly less subtle squeeing and TALKING ABOUT IT AT TWOP SO IT CAN GET SHUT DOWN BEFORE THE FINALE.

Oh my god, people, Rob Thomas is not DUMB. Why do people persist in this tiny bubble where all TV people are just giant human blocks of stupid who will NEVER CATCH ON? And, for that matter, what makes you think LJ as a community is? These are SMART PEOPLE. They realize that there are illegal downloads and if they're informed they are LEGALLY OBLIGATED to shut our asses down.

Think about a drug dealer. If you want your crack, you have to be subtle. You have to be sneaky. You have to, you know, make your connections, and maybe NOT go blabbing to the nice happy undercover policeman. Because then he will NAB your crack dealer, and you will never get a fix ever, ever again.

There's a lesson to be learned here. It's buried, but it's there. Do you see it?

Yeah.

Look, I'm not disappointed we got shut down. I got what I wanted out of the community. Over 1000 new VMars fans, and more on the way. I also got some feelings about the fandom, got in from the ground up, and ended up meeting some fucking awesome people. I'm disappointed in some people, but dude, it's fucking fandom, and it's not like I don't have the entire series on my hard drive for easy access if worst comes to worst.

Contrary to popular opinion, I do not hate all of VMars fandom. Most, possibly, but not all. And the reason I hate large portions is that they say things that are just stupid. And then I will sit down, and read a lot of people's ep reactions, and their fic, and their theories, and I'll realize that there are a lot of you I like, a lot of you I'd even like to friend, except I'm a dork who's too shy to friend people first, as a general rule. And then I'll say "Gosh. Maybe they're not that dumb at all."

And then I'll see that go_pirates got shut down, and I'll think about why.

Way to go, fandom. I always love to be proven right.

So. I'm sure most people who came to find out what happened with go_pirates so that they can have a target to blame and, you know, go stone their village or whatever.

Good luck with that.
