So as you know if you follow me on Twitter, I rewatched Rent on Saturday.

True story: my claim to fame is basically starting the Mark/Roger pairing in Rent fandom? And eventually became totally bored of the pairing and turned into a huge Rent fandom hipster and decided I wasn't interested in Mark/Roger anymore, I was into Mark/Benny. I had this epic headcanon about how Benny had been in love with Mark when they were at school together and Alison Grey had been at school with them too. And Alison had a thing for Benny and Benny was in love with Mark, so when Mark suggested they move to New York to be ~*artists*~ after they graduate, Benny goes along with it, even though Alison is like, "This is a terrible idea" to both of them.

And Mark and Benny need a roommate, so they find Roger, who Mark is suddenly obsessed with and Benny thinks is a bad influence. Roger is the one who starts getting them all to treat Benny like trash and act like he doesn't belong since he comes from an upper middle class family. (Mark is legit despite also coming from an upper middle class family, because Mark is sycophantic and Roger likes that.) And they cycle through all the roommates and Benny gets more and more bitter and reconnects with Alison and starts dating her and is still stuck on Mark and everything just goes to hell.

SO, ANYWAY, I HAVE A LOT OF SYMPATHY FOR BENNY. Also, when I was a teenager, I was super melodramatic and obvs wanted badly to be cool enough to be like the people in Rent.
