Priorities: I has them.

That was not a snowpocalypse. It was not a snowmageddon, or even a snow storm. It was barely a flurry. It was, like, a few hours of some flaking, which is not in any way problematic or impeding anyone driving or anything, which completely makes my trip last night to get groceries feel worthless.

Not that that means I'm leaving the house in the next 48 hours, because I'm not. But it was nice to have an excuse that would justify it. Right now it's just "pajamas good"- which I believe in wholeheartedly, but still.

Anyway, I'm occupied by plenty of things at home. Like going through magazines to throw them out! I am making progress! And reading. I have misssssssed reading. I just finished the last Princess Diaries book, and I'm reading "Wake" now. I want to get through as many books published in '08 as I can in the next ten or so days. I should really start checking publication dates.

I feel like kind of a shitty American for this, but as excited as I am about President Obama (!!!!!)'s inauguration on the 20th, I think I'm more excited about the announcement of the Newbery, Caldecott, and Printz awards on the 19th. Because, I mean, I know I'm going to like how the inauguration goes, but the children's lit awards could either thrill me or make me hate everyone. It's the kind of excitement that makes me love my field!

I am trying to decide what my ideal winners are, although this goal is somewhat skewed by having no idea about which of the books I read in '08 were actually published in '08. So my needs right now are pretty basic: a picturebook that is actually a picturebook and which has mixed-media illustrations, a middle grade book that's readable so people will stop saying the Newbery is outdated, and a Printz winner that is something awesome.

The truth is, I'm actually excited about runners-up as well as winners, because the Printz committee has in the past years had excellent taste in books that I would like to read. I think on Monday I may have to go out and buy all the books that haven't gotten stickered yet, just because I like having copies before the shiny foil circle ruins the cover design.

Anyone want to place your bets for any of the ALA awards? I am in the mood to discuss!

lit: ya, national hoh, lit: kidlit, whether there will be weather
