Long strings of tinsel across the walls. Seasonal decoration, ornate chandeliers, scented candles, strings of holly…

(“Not her, please.”)

Minerva walked down the stairs, her white dress swishing around in all its silky magnificence. Her golden belt brought out the lights in her hair, and Artemis’ smile brought out the lights in her eyes.

But late at night, after the celebrations died out, she remembered his stray smiles when the fireworks splashed their sparks across the skies: red after gold after blue…

The shadows hid her scowl as her fist crumpled under the blankets.
