If you hear that someone is speaking ill of you, instead of trying to defend yourself you should say, "He obviously does not know me very well, since there are so many other faults he could have mentioned."

That's kind of pessimistic! I always make sure to tell them all of my wonderful points!

That comes off as bragging.

Why shouldn't I brag about what I know is awesome?

Usually it makes the person you're speaking to feel bad about themselves.

So people who know you well, will only want to talk about your faults?

Now that you mention it, the people who know me well do discuss my faults very often.

Most people don't show their worst to people they don't trust, but it's implied you trust them because they won't divulge, right?

So, I'm confused. This is an invitation to humility or a cynic view of friendship?

I don't think that's correct. Those who have hurt me most were usually strangers when they did their worst. And if like me you have the misfortune of then being forced to remain in their company, you learn many other bad things about them.

But overall this is meant as a comfort, that one should brush off prejudice.

That is a very welcomed modest way of dealing with hearing disheartening talk Heracles-san.

Living and speaking in a very modest manner is a corner stone of Buddhism.

I really do enjoy seeing such views being spread outside religions.
It is something I can easily relate to.

Also, I would not say it is a depressing comment.

I don't see what everyone thinks is so depressing. I guess they don't think about their bad side very much.
